Al-Nassr Scrape Past Al-Riyadh 1-0, With Mane’s Goal Proving the Difference

Al-Nassr had a task on their hands after Al-Hilal's dominant win over Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq earlier on Friday, which saw them open an eight-point gap at the top of the table. But Al-Nassr made a strong start, with Cristiano Ronaldo constantly finding space between the Al-Riyadh center-backs, forcing goalkeeper Milan Borjan into action early on. The Portuguese forward was denied twice within the first 15 minutes, but his threat was clear.

As the match wore on, Al-Nassr tightened their grip, and it seemed only a matter of time before they would break through. They finally did in the 41st minute, with Sadio Mane netting the opener. Otavio threaded a brilliant pass through to Abdulrahman Ghareeb, who squared the ball to the back post for Mane. Despite being tightly marked, the Senegalese forward got there first, slotting the ball past Borjan. Mane almost doubled his tally moments later with a one-on-one chance, but Borjan came out on top this time.

After the break, Al-Riyadh came out with more intent, creating problems for Al-Nassr. Bernard Mensah was a constant threat down the right, causing trouble for Sultan Al-Ghannam. The Ghanaian almost equalized, but Ali Lajami's crucial goal-line clearance denied him. Despite their improved play, Al-Riyadh’s momentum soon faded as Marcelo Brozovic and Otavio regained control in midfield. However, the final ball still eluded Al-Nassr, and frustration started to build for Ronaldo, who made several runs into the box but was let down by poor service.

In the final stages, Ronaldo dropped deeper to get more involved in the play, but Al-Nassr's attacking struggles continued. Talisca’s wasteful finishing meant the score remained 1-0, and Al-Nassr held on for the three points.

THE MVP

Al-Nassr can’t afford to drop any more points as they chase down leaders Al-Hilal, and it was Sadio Mane’s opportunistic strike that proved to be the difference. Had it not been for his decisive goal, coach Stefano Pioli might have found himself under heavy scrutiny. While Mane could have had a brace if he’d been more clinical, his contribution was enough to see Al-Nassr over the line and secure the crucial three points.
